How It Works
Three Splitting Methods
- Equal Split — Divides the total bill evenly among all housemates. Simple and fair when rooms and usage are similar.
- By Room Size — Splits the bill proportionally based on each person's room area. Larger rooms typically consume more energy for heating, cooling, and lighting. Shared areas (kitchen, living room) are divided equally among all housemates.
- By Appliance Usage — Allocates cost based on each person's estimated energy consumption. Add individual appliances with their wattage and daily usage hours. The bill is split proportionally to each person's total watt-hours.
Room Size Method
The formula splits the bill into two portions:
- Shared portion: (shared area ÷ total area) × bill, divided equally
- Private portion: (room area ÷ total private area) × remaining bill
If no shared area is specified, the entire bill is split proportionally by room size.
Usage Method
Each person's energy share is calculated as:
- Daily Wh = sum of (watts × hours/day) for all their appliances
- Share = person's daily Wh ÷ total daily Wh of all people
- Amount owed = share × total bill
Tips
- For the most accurate split, combine room size with appliance usage by averaging both methods
- Check appliance wattage on the device label or in the user manual
- Shared appliances (fridge, router) can be excluded since their cost is split equally by default
- Review and adjust the split each billing period as usage patterns change
